Many people asked me again the past weeks how they should deal with holidays and travel to Thailand in the light of the Final tribute to the beloved late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
I was in Thailand the first half of November last year and go back next week, so I will keep you informed here.
There is a week of remembrance Starting 25th till 29th of October
What is happening?
Entertainment venues are put on "low profile" and could be closed (early) during that week. Especially on the 26th there will be large impact as it has been declared a national holiday.
Most shopping Malls, all banks, cinema's, most musea, most theme parks and big tourist attractions will be closed om the 26th of October. Most super markets will close on the 26th in the afternoon.
The BTS SkyTrain and MRT Subway in Bangkok offer free services on 26th October!
Bangkok’s Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha is opening again on October 30th 2017.
As of October 30th everything is business as usual again.
Why was the King so popular?
He was on the throne for 70 years and was a very popular King but also a composer, inventor, photographer,... a multi-talented man. Most Thai alive today never knew another ruler of the country. And everywhere you go in Thailand King Bhumibol is present with pictures and icons.
Is it safe? yes there are absolutely no problems reported at this moment.
What to do and what not to do?
Show respect. Tourist are not expected to wear black or white clothes, but of course you can and will gain respect for that.
You will meet a lot of Thai who dress in black or white. Never make fun of the King or Royal Family or criticize them, since this can be punished by law. Don't be afraid to talk about the King with Thai you meet. Many of them will gladly explain why they have pain in their heart now.
Update: October 12th 2017
